7 Best Remote Desktop Connection Applications

Either you want to repair your family computer remotely or share your personal computer with others in your network, you need an application that is efficient and trusty. Here are the list of some Remote Desktop applications to access any computer remotely just like you are right beside the remote computer.

Tip: Remotely Shut Down any Computer.

Windows Remote Desktop Connection

Windows Remote Desktop Connection tool comes bundled with the Windows installation pack. It is best enough to use to remotely access any computer if you are in Windows system. So if you are still finding for a simple remote desktop tool and did not yet go through the Remote Desktop Connection from the Accessories folder under Windows start menu programs, you can give it a try. Know how to setup Windows Remote Desktop Connection.

Teamviewer is no doubt a very popular application for the newbies to provide remote desktop access. It is easy to install and simple to recognize the interface. One of the end user can start a session by generating the unique Teamviewer id and password and supplying those to the partner to the other end. After getting connected, the active user can access the desktop of the remote computer, provide any type of support, transfer files etc.

The program is free, available for Windows, Linux, Mac even for mobiles like iPhone etc.

Instant Housecall

Instant Housecall is nothing but a simpler version of Teamviewer. This works almost identically with the Teamviewer except some ornaments.

Eventually, its is more speedy than the Teamviewer, probably for its simplicity. So if you are having problem with Teamviewer due to the slow internet connection, Instant Housecall can be the best alternative with same features.

Another very popular solution for the remote desktop connection is LogMeIn. Unlike Teamviewer, LogMeIn has two versions available: LogMeIn Free and LogMeIn Pro. Both the free and pro versions provide a hassle-free interface to control remote computer. But the pro version comes with some extra flavor including  additional features like drag-and-drop file transfer, synchronization, and more meeting tools. LogMeIn Pro charges $13/month and $70/year. Where the Professional version gives more facilities, some people are still happy with the LogMeIn free version instead.

ThinVNC comes in the limelight with a different approach of Remote Desktop Connection. This application can create browser based sessions, supported in the popular web browser like Firefox, Chrome, IE etc. As HTML 5 has introduced some advanced features, it takes that advantage and create a session for the partner computer and show the screens in the active users’ browser.

The only downside of this application is that it is not as easy to setup as the aforementioned Remote Desktop Connection tools. The user should have some minimum knowledge on IP address, Port etc.

But you can still go ahead step by step by following the proper instruction. Once you are done with the setup, you can create a session between remote computers from your home, Cyber-cafe or your college campus. ThinVNC is free of cost.

TightVNC (Linux/ Windows)

TightVNC is a open source, cross platform Remote Desktop Application. The mechanism of this application is simple. You have to set up a VNC server to the computer that you want to control remotely. Once your setup is done, you can access the computer from any where else in the web. You can also control TightVNC from a web browser instead of carrying the TightVNC client.

UltraVNC (Windows)

UltraVNC is a windows based application to control computers remotely. This application needs to setup a VNC at the target computer that you want to remotely control. Though it is Windows application, you can access the target computer from any operating system using the web browsers. This open source application serves some extra flavor with its features including file transfer support, text chat and support for optional plug-ins.

I’d also include Techinline (www.techinline.com) in this list. It’s dead-simple to use and priced at a fraction of LogMeIn Rescue

Thanks for the post. I use a combination of ScreenConnect and Teamveiwer- my favorite being ScreenCOnnect. When considering all features and price it seems to beat most of the combination. I use my old Teamviewer license as backup like when an antivirus flags or something.
